In

REMINISCENCE,

ONCE UPON A TIME

By A. G. Thornton, in the Daily Chronicle,

Long ago, when my seniors cast their net of reminiscence into the days of their youth, I used to listen with respect

“Lot me seo," the phrase would run, "that would bo 40-no, 45 years ago, now. Forty-ave your ago.” And then the reminiscent one would look at me, and I would say, with profound humility, "Really," or "A long time ago, that." Where- upon the veteran, encouraged, would go back another ten years. those days I talked of five years ago with a certain pride,

∙an ten with air. A memory extending to 40 years seemed bordering on the historical. Life always takes us by sur- prise. Listening the other night, with my usual politeness, to man who was recalling events of the nineties, life suddenly gave" me a kick in the ribs. "An" ag- tonishing fact was borne in upon me. I am not a man to use italics without just cause, but I reach for my italics now. Here is the fact-

Д

I can clearly remember the Diamond Jubilee. A lot of people I know will sneer at this as being hurdly n reminiscence at all, They will talk of the real Jubilee as distinct from a mere modern, almost twentieth century upstart, but I am merely giving it as an in- dication I have now. become de finitely historical. I have more, weight: I am able to sit upon youth with that calm importancë and heavy dignity which 'ignores the squirming of the particular youth concerned, while it goes further and further back into the past.

But I have may suspicions of grandad, 'now I am beginning to recollect a bit for myself. Re miniscence grows upon one 80. The best-reminiscencer I know is an old man for whom I have the greatest admiration. His family, are unkind to him in this matter, and he comes to me as one who understands all his ideas and memories. When I first know him his strong it was the 'sixties, but the 'six.ies have become a little tame in recent months and he is now flirting with the "fifties.

It is clear I must arrange my reminiscences a little. The time has come for retrospect. I must sort myself out a bit.

At the moment, I confess, I am rather amateurish. I have not got very far away from the Diamond Jubilee. But confidence comes with practice. Next year I shall be on easy terms with the early nineties. The early nineties are as near to the 'eighties as makes no difference, so why bother to talk about the Diamond Jubi lee? Why not just the Jubilee. Already I remember there was a song called "Oh, the Jubilee."!" I often sang It
