A TALE OF PARIS,
LAUNDRESS GOES TO JAIL.
Puris, Mar. 9-An exemplary sentence has just been passed on a laundress, who, by way of add- ing insult to injury, was imper- tinent to an Englishwoman, whose five chemises she had mangled to many a tattor. The customer, the mook-looking wife of a missionary, and on. louvo from Burma, had determined to spend a week in Paris, in order that

Tho devout evangelist's report, which your scribe has been privileged to read, is rubbish founded on meré hearmy. But, aftor the long voyage from the distant East, tho gospeller's much-used garmonts undoubtedly needed the laun dress's attentions. They really were in a terrible state.
The trouble began three days after the clothes were sent to the Flanudry, the blanchisseuse hav- ing French fashion, omitted th roturn them on the promised date. Time passed, the mis sionary's sponso doing us heat sho could by undertaking hor own washing and drying the clothes on conveniently-placed central-heating apparatus. Final-| ly, the poor thing, her patience at

who had a smattering of the vernacular and policeman. To her consternation, three pairs of pantaloons were rent asunder, a catastrophe which it took con- sidurable sewing to make" gand. Three camisoles ulso were much the worse for the inexpert aiten- tions of the operators and even pairs cf white cotton stockings, were ruthlessly torn. But of the five chemises (most austere, un- interesting apparel), there re- mained only a few shreds..
The customer was the reverse' of meek and mild; she expressed berselfin suitablo torins, and bade' the interpreter translate. There- upan, the laundress, furious at having been reprimanded by the wearer of chemises wanting in allurement, poured out a stroam of abuse and filthy abuse, too

The blanchisseuse, though very pologetic and even more tearful! than Niobe, had to face the stern magistrate, who fined her two thousand francs, four hundred of! which were handed to the plaintiff: The beastly laundress also was sent to jail for thros months.
FIRE AS A JOKE,
AUDIENCE LAUGHS ITS WAY TO SAFETY,
Vienna, March 13,-Coolness: of the manager and the actors of the Apollo Theatre saved the lives of many persons when the theatre caught fire.
A revue calicd "Apollo, Only Apollo, " was playing and the slage was set as a temple, with sixty dancing girls performing, when flames from the neighboring Apollo Hotel were carried by a strong wind to the theatro roof.
Sixteen hundred persons were in the theatro.
With the roof of the theatre ablaze, the leader of the fire brigade, informed the manager that the danger was not im- minont, but that a great disaster might result from a panic, and advised the continuation of the performance until he gavo netlee- that evacuation was unavoidable. The manager, with the co- operation of the actors, went on with the revuo. At 9:45 the fire brigado director advised the manager that the dunger was im- minent and that the thoutre must bo, immediately emptied.
Stepping to the edge of the stago, the manager jokingly re- marked that a fire had broken out in a near-by house and that the polico, who were always so officious and annoying, had in- sisted, as a precaution, that it would be advisablo to evacuate the theatro. Ho made several jokes, at which the audience laughed heartily, invited them to see the rost of the performance on the following night, and bade them Indiou.
Not until they were in the strnets did the people realize the theatre was in flames. Nobody was evon alightly injured.
