RECENT KOWLOON

STRUGGLE.

WOUNDED MAN SENTENCED.

A recent shooting incident, in which a Chinese was wounded by a district watchman, after a des perate struggle, was, recalled at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning, when the wounded man; was charged, before Mr. J. H. B. Nihill, on three counts arising out of the incident.

The charges wero (1) unlawful possession of a plank; (2) unlaw-; fully resisting arrest. and (3) unlawfully damaging the com- plainant's uniform.

The dfstries watchman, giving evidence, said that whilst on duty in Nathan Rond, on the night of the 5th inst, he saw the defen- dant emerge from a contractor's shed with a plank on his shoulder. Witness followed him into Public Square Street, and then the defen- dunt went into a scavenging lane. After shouting to the man to stop, witness seized him and questioned him about the plank. Defendant dropped the wood and struggle} in an endeavour to escape. Wit- ness blew a police whistle which. however, the defendant wrenched from his hands, and witness then | drew his baton. The defendant adopted more drustle tactics, and brought the watchman to the ground, causing him to 'shout for assistance. Using his left hand. witnesk sourched for his ro volver, but his hand WAS solzed 'by the defendant. Witness managed to pull the trig- ger of his weapon, discharging one round into the ground. The de fendant still struggled and witnes fired once more, wounding the de- fendant in the log.

In answer to questiona askea be} the Magistrate,' .witness said that he had not known the defen dant before but had seen him in the streets and had suspected him

of being an undesirable, before: the incident on the 5th inst.

After further evidence was call- ed, the defendant went into the witness box. He claimed to have

piven certain information to a re venue officer and had gone into r scavenging lane, off Portland: Street, to watch a house where opium fiends were preparing the drug, Ho was there for a short | period when the watchman accost- ed him and accused him of steal- ing plank which was lying on the ground. Defendant denied the charge and was assaulted "After protesting at being saulted. defendant struggled with the watchman in self-defence.

Continuing; defendant said the watchman drew his revolver and. fired two cunds, the first shot tak ing effect and not the second, as stated by the complainant.

Questioned by the Magistrate, defendant said he did not strike the complainant, but he might possibly have seized hold of his
