DOCTOR WILL NOT TELL
REFUSAL TO DIVULGE PATIENT'S NAME.
"A doctor's refusal to divulge the name of a morphine addict whom he was treating, because he feared the patient's business posi-· tion might be endangered, was the subject of a summons at the Mansion House Police Court re-. cently.
George Chadwick Kingsbury, a registered medical practitioner and a barrister-at-law, of Elm Court, Temple, E.C., was summon- fed for failing to comply with the Dangerous Drugs Act in not re- gistering the name and address of a patient to whom he supplied morphine.
A nominal penalty of 25 gulneas was imposed, with ten guineas costs, and Dr. Kingsbury gave notice of appeal.
He said he was representing the medical profession in the matter. He had the support of some of the lending surgeons and of a cele- (brated physician.

and to emphasize, on the express instructions of the Director of Public Prosecutions, that the charge conveyed not the slightest reflection on the doctor's personal Jhonour.
It was the policy of the Home Office, however, to insist upon the absolute compliance with the Act, for the protection of the con- munity.
Dr. Kingsbury had declined and still declined to disclose the name of a patient for whom for over 12 months he had been regularly purchasing morphine from # chemist. He gave the patient's nathe as "Mr. Brown" to the chemist, making clear that the name was fictitious.
Dr. Kingsbury had expi:.inëd that he was not now carrying on a regular practice, but that he had two old patients who were morphine addicts-a woman whom he had succeeded in ouring, and a man of 70, who he said was improving.
Counsel said the Home Office must have the name and address of a morphine addict, because he might be obtaining the drug from different sources.
