There may be many disappoint-share quotations issued to-day :- ments on the long road towards the final world-wide consegration of the Locarne spirit, sald Sir Austen Chamberlain when receiving the freedom of Birmingham. He was warning his listeners to expect a' controversy over Germany'a entry into the League and the place she would occupy therein, but he added that "if the men who met at Lo- carno could meet and discuss the new problem they would be able to deal satisfactorily with it."-Ren- iter.
FOREIGN POLITICS,
Rugby, Feb. 29.
re-
Sir Austen Chamberlain cieved a remarkable ovation when the Freedom of the City of Bir- mingham was conferred upon him to-day.
In acknowledging the honour done him by his fellow-citizens,
he made reference to his work-as Foreign Secretary. He declared
that foreign affairs should never be a matter of party politics, for to evolve a common faetor out of the diverse temperaments of i many different nations must of; itself tax the energies of any politician. He urged his listeners not to be disappointed if a con- troversy broke out over Germany entering the League of National and over the place of Germany`in the league. For his part, he was convinced that if the same men who met at Locarno could meet and discuss the new problem they would be able practically to deal with it,
In conclusion, Sir Austen Cham- berlain said he would ask that his public work should be judged by two offorts for the cause of peace, nafnely. the work which he did for the Irish Treaty and the part ho played in the Treaty, of | Locarno, British Wireless.
