Some little while ago an early "return of the waistline was predicted. It now appears that there is to be no gradualness about the revival, but that the thin waist, and not merely the suggestion of a line, is to bo really fashionable once more.

HINTS ON FACIAL MASSAGE.

Facial massage by smoothing and stroking the skin is no longer given in the most famous beauty parlours. Instead of this gentle treatmant the face is pinched and slapped and the creams used for "feoding" the skin aro lightly patted into it. One method which a world-famous specialist uses is to saturate a piece of cotton wool in an astringent lotion, then dip it in cream, and going over the whole face pat the cream into the skin with brisk little taps. This treatment is considered mioce bracing to the niuscles than stroking and has the groat advantage that it cannot stretch the skin in any way. This method is particularly offective when there is a tendency towards a drooping of the musclos around the mouth and chin, for it stimulates them into renewed | elasticity.

BLACK FOR FURNISHING.

With the modern love of bright pure colours in furnishing, it is a logical outcome that black should also be mach 'used, seeing that it. is the natural foil Yet it noads to be used carefully. We read of, and sometimes see, black walla and ceilings, but they are outside our 'consideration, as, generally speaking, they are quite unsuited to the average room.

But black used as an otcetera, rather than as a basis, is another matter. FOR THE SMALL BEDROOM.

more

Furniture designers and manu- facturers are more and coming to the conclusion that it is for the miniature, home that they must cater. So it is that we aro in these days offered a very good selection of items that give the maximum of capacity in the minimum of space. Two such itoms are the fitted dressing! chest, and a fitted suit cabinet. They are primarily intended for the use of a man, and are small enough to go into a tiny dressing room, or oven to find a pince alongside an ordinary suite, and thus free that for the use of the mistress of the house. Never- theless, whero space is limited; a woman could put them to very good use.

The dressing chest is dosigned with the lower part as a small wardrobe with double doors, and standing four feet high. In the left-hand section thore is a rail with half a dozón hangers, two hat shelves and rails for various small items. In the other halfi there are two capacious drawork; one of them subdivided for handkerchiefs, &c. HOUSEHOLD BREVITIES.

To clean baskat chairs scrub them thoroughly with hot soapy water, then rinse in clear water to which a little salt has been added. This tends to stiffon them:

If you

use straw matting, apply a coat of ulear varnish to matting before it is used. This makes it last much longer than it otherwise would do, and it always looks fresh and nice.

Never fill an enamel saucepan that has been burned with soda water, for though this will re- move the burnt portion, it will also make the pan likely to bura again the next time it is used. Use salt instead of soda. Fill the saucepan with cold salt water, bring slowly to the boil, and the pan will be quito clean, while there will be no bad after-effects.

If cups and saucors or bedroom basins, or anything of that kind, got stained, rub the marks with a cloth dipped in a littlo damp salt, rinse well and dry thoroughly.

Wash silver once a week in warm, water, to which a little ammonia and whiting have, baen added. Rinse in clear water, and at once wipe with a clean, dry cloth. If this is done, silvor will seldom need any further cloaning. When machining a thin materi- al a piece of paper should always be run through the machine with it, or it is almost sure to draw. Even quite thin material, such na chiffon, can be stitched satisfac- torily if this is done.

Ink or iron mould stains on white materials, if not of too long atanding, can be removed this way. Dip the stained part in vory hot water, rub with a frosh- ly-out lemon, then cover, the place with salt. Leave for a fow minutes and the stain will pro- bably disappear.
