THE "JADE" PIRACY.

PIRATE CHIEF'S CRYPTIC KEMARK,

Some hitherto unreported facts concerning the manner in which the pirates from Bias Buy seized and controlled the French steamer Jade on her last trip from Kwarg Chow Wan tre made available in' an interview which a Telegraph representative had with the, Cap- thin this morning.

Captain Maternali saye that the attack which resulted m the gir aten obtaining control of the Wilh occurred at 2 p.m. on the 9th. The pirates worked together in groups of two or threes, and aja peared to be led by a chief who age the Captain, speculates to be somewhere about 45 years. He wa dressed in the same shabby way as his subordinates, but his maine was characterised by great as- Hurance. This was demgustrated in a remark made to Captain Maternati, when the latter, on ar- rival at a Bay, expresand' his fear that there would not be suf fielent draught for the vessel. "the reply being:-"lave no fear on that account, Captain. You may not know it, but I have led salpa in here before, and I shall know what 1 am doing."

The pirate chief's remark is cryptically phrased, but it is, of interest when taken in conjung tion with his other statements toi the Captain, to the effect that he hat led many other similar piracies, an average of one in each year,

The exact locality in Bins Bay into which the Jade was bended is known as Fan Lo. Kong. It is
