hrgely in buses, and its food- stuffs and other necessaries are transported to an ever-increasing extent by that means. Economy, comfort, and safety are involved in expediting and increasing the scale of our road work, which is essential if we are to distribute the population and avoid over- crowding in our large cities.

The Single Tax Principle...

It is plain that the motoring organisations will have to asso- ciate themselves directly and pre- sent a united front on the subject with County Councils, Borough Councils, and all manner of other bodies concerned. with road. making maintenance, and use, that being the only means to ensure in this time of great financial stress. that the right thing shall be done.

By contrast, this is a most un- favourable time for individual motoring organisations to air their cherished schemes for re- casting the basis of car taxation, and so forth. If anything of that! sort is indulged, the result will! be to land us with a dual taxi instead of a single one on motor- Ing, a point of supreme impor- tance. It was very difficult to get back to a single tax on motoring, which is the only means of check- ing the total amount it costs the individual. Any dual tax is the golden opportunity for Govern- pents to play ducks and drakes with the gross amount contri- buted. When we had a petrol tax as well as a horse-power tax, the situation was wholly unsatis factory: large number of motorists of my acquaintance boasted that they never paid a farthing fuel tax from the time the measure was introduced to the time of its withdrawal."

1n the international sphere, us far as motoring competitions are conecrned, the year starts with the provision of a series of, new international regulations govern ing this all-important matter for the evolution of automobile en- gineering and yehicle building, At the moment it must suffice to mention in passing that the new rules further provide means for each recognised body to draw up any rules that may seem good for competitions of a national charac- ter within the borders of the given country.

As regards our major, competi- tions, namely, the series of Grand Prix races on the Continent · of Europe-France, June 89; Spain, July 26; England, August 2; and Italy, September 5; and the Ameri- can premier event in the Indiana- polis race on May 30-this year, the maximum engine permissible is 1,500 cc. cylinder content, or half the size of the small car or voiturette engine category seven years ago; yet miniature 1,500 s.c.
