HONGRONG BANK BUILDING,
ACROSS AUSTRALIA BY MOTOR.
HAZARDOUS JOURNEY THROUGH SAND AND MUD.
The report has just reached Hongkong of a remarkable motor journey across Australia, undertaken by the Metropolitan Ice, and Fresh Food Co., Pty. Ltd. of Melbourne. The route was from Melbourne to Adelaide, from thence across the great stretch of almost unknown country, Darwin, returning via Brisbane and Sydney--an approximate distance of 6216 miles. We believe that a similar trip' way i undertaken some few years ago, by the well known explorer of Australia's "Great Unknown" Frantels Birtles, but in that instance a light car wits employed and the minimum of baggage carried. The tour under. review was accomplished with a heavy tommercial vehicle-an "A.E.C-the fully loaded" weight being 6% tons.
-After heavy rains, the rich soil becomes a cefituble qiaguire as this photo shoes.
The arranging of such a difficult trip.as this, naturally calls for the most careful calculations regarding fuelling, provisioning etc., for it has to be remembered that much of the route is through country which, to all intents and purposes is unexplored, Rivers, or as they are commonly know in Australia-creeks have to be crossed, which: although possibly in low water at times, are liable
to become raging tofrents after heavy rain.
