THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,
MOTORISTS' REMARKABLE ESCAPE FROM DEATH.
An serpe front death, so nirw that is seems impossible, was experienced by Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Quile of Minneapolis, Minn., U. SPA, when their car collided with a motor lorry on the bridge over the Hennepin Canal at Colona, II: As a result of the impact, their car plunged through the bridge railing, the rear wheels becoming caught ou the very edge of the bridge itself. It took over an hour to effect a rescue.

experimental stage, with the successful adoption
of this method of propulsion on a shallow-draught tug recently eam- pleted "for service in the Far East. The vessel in question, which hus been built by William Denny & Bros. Ltd., at Dunbarton, has the following principal dimensions:-

the draught must not exceed 2 ft.) with a load of 4 tons on board- and in view also of the fact that good towing qualities were quired, il was decided to adopt propulsion by vane-wheels instead of fitting propellers of the ordin- ary type running in tunnels. rangement, the vessel is provided with a gontinuous deck for its entire length, the hull being sub- divided by means of three water- tight bulkheads, yielding a chain locker right forward, the crew's quarters, the engine room with compressed air, reservoir stowage amidships, and à compartment right aft. Twa deck-houses are provided, one of which serves do give sufficient head room to" the crew's quarters. while the second. covers the main engine. The wheel-house is situated forward of phe first duck-house, while a raised runwale gives protection to the forecast deck on which is a hand-oprated capstan and an anchor davit, in addition to the necessary morning arrangements. An awning is fitted aver the entire forward part of the vessel extend- ing uft as far as the towing hook.
The most interesting feature of this ttle vessel lies, of course. in the method of propulsion. Two vane-wheels, each 6 ft. diam, have been fitted, and these are driven through chain gearing from it single direct reversible heavy-di! ungine. The engine, which was supplied by Norris, Hanty & Gard- ners Limited, of Patricroft, neur Manchester, has four cylinders i and develons 96 b.h.p. at a speed) of 370 rpm when developing its full power. Owing to the size of the vane-wheels, the propeller shafts and the after bearings are well above the waterline, and to connect these with the main shaft of the engine, chain gearing is employed. The chains, which are of Hans Renolds type, work in an oil-tight gear case, lubricat ing oil being sprayed on to the driving pioions under pressure by a pump driven from one of the chain wheel spindles.
The gearing gives a ratio re duction of about 3.5 to 1, the vane. wheels having a speed at full load of about 105 r.p.m. In previous vessels fitted with vane-wheel pro- pulsion each wheel had its own engine, but the highly satisfactors results obtained on trial have fully justiited the arrangement adopted on this vessel, the gents being particularly quiet when run-
ning.
Trial Results.
The vessel recently underwent an exhaustive series of trials on the River Clyde,' both when run- ning free and whan towing, and during these trials, the power de- veloped, and the fuel consumption and the speed of about 9 knots was obtained, and when towing and other vessel over 80 ft. long the mean speed, was about 6% knots. The engine was run on crude oil, trials was about 6, gallons per and the consumption during the hour. It will be realised, there- fore, that the cost of fuel for run- ning this vessel is remarkably small:
The vessel has now been dis- mantled and shipped to har des- tination in the Far East, it having been found necessary to cut the hull in two in order to facilitate shipment.
