OBITUARY.

MK. SUTHERLAND STEWART,

The death took place at the Government Civil Hospital o Friday of MI Sutheriad Stewart in his 40th Text. For the last six and half years the deceased had team. employed at the Taikoo Sugar Refinery and his passing away will be regretted by all those who knew him.

The late Mr. Stewart, who is a native of Greenock, Scotland ar- rived in the Colony from Africa and during his younger days ind | travelled fairly extensively He leaves a wife and three daughters.. RESCUE FROM SHARK.

Albert Medal Awarded.

It was announced in a resent London Gazette that the King has conferred the decoration of the Albert Medal on Gordon Lees of Nowcastic, New South Wal for the rescue of a youth nania) Jack Canning, who was attacked by a man-oating shark when bathing at Newcastle, New South Wales, on March 12 of this year. Loen, employed by the city council to patrol the beach'and assist surf bathers in difficultios. put, on a bolt with a life-lin: attached, and swan out alone to the assistance of Canning, wi bad been attacked three times by the shark and was torribly in jured. Lees roached hini just as ho appeared to abandon further effort to save himself. The alark was then only a few yards away from rescnor and rescued. Loes" lifted Canning up when he was almost submerged and the two worg hauled in to the beach by. the lifeline. The rescued man, unfortunately, died shortly after warde.
