LR.C. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP.
"
The Singles Championship event of the L.R.C. annua) tennis tournament was concluded yester day morning, when S. A. Rumjahn and J. Cassumbho met in the final. The match was particularly interesting in that the former, as most tennis patrons are aware, ranks among the most experienced players ia the Club, while, Cas- sumbhoy is the youngest competi- tor, making his initial appearance in the Championship; and those. who saw him play yesterday did not go away without compliment- ing him on his play.
Rumjahn won, as was expected.. but Caseumbhoy made him play. very hard to win by three sets to one, The young finalist was in. great form in the second set and proved a mutch for his opponent. He lost the first game, but there after kept Rumjahn on the run most of the time, beating him with many erosa shots and conceding only one more game in the sot and." therefore, guide the score one set all. Unfortunately for him, how- ever, Rumjahn got into his strido immediately and secured the next two sets, for the loss of three games, although the strokes were more evenly divided. The final scores were 6-2; 2-6; 6-0; and 4-37
J. Cassumbhoy has done very crealitably in reaching the final this being his first appearance this year, and in putting up such a good performance against an older and more experienced player. He is still in his teens and is the youngest competitor in this event, He has played tennis for a few years only but acquired some ex- perience in the 2nd League. A left-hander, he is an all round player with a free and easy style whilst a good service and a fore- hand cross shot drive are his chief assets. He is very fast on his feet and has the knack of saving and returning difficult shots from his opponent. I.R.C. has a future hope in this young player who will. doubtless continue to improve and figure soon in the local cham- pionships.
