· Hyacinth.
Tew roalise how great an evil the water hyabinth has become in the Eastern Bangal districts and Assam, says an Indian exchange. Indood, just as malaria has been causing ravages among the in- habitante of Western Bongal, the abnormal growth of wator- hyacinth has become a menace to health and property in Eastern Bengal. The crops of these districta, especially juto and paddy, are severely effected, particularly in the lowlying areas, [the genoral estimate being that 50 per cent. is damaged. The small water-ways have been practically blocked by the weed and communication is being in- terfered with, and these difficul-

The growth of water-hgacinth has also killed other weeds and) plants in the water-ways which have been used as fadder for cattle, with the rosult that the Ipeople have now to fall back on
water-hyacinth for fodder. But] |95 per cent. of the plant is water and consequently the cattle suffer, The latest Information) available goes to show that more than 10,000 cattle died last year. It will be nowe to many also tu hour that beds of water-hyacinth are frequented by dangerous

MYSTERIOUS ORIGIN,
Tho origin of the plant in Bengal is wrapped in mystery, though a number of theorios are now advariced. Its introduction into the Province has boon at- tributed by some to Mr. Morgan, of Narayanganj, who, it is said. brought the plant for its flower. Another theory is that it was al Syllet teu planter, who was responsible for its coming. But whichever theory is correct, the fact remains that the present situation is an alarming one and demands the serious attention of the Government and the public alike.
It is generally recognised now that whatever means is employed in killing the plant, no tangiblo results will ensue unless some) sort of concerted action is taken. To deal with the position a small committee consisting of repre- sentatives of the Government Departments concerned, and of | leading voluntary association has boen formed to organise an in- tensive campaign for dealing. with the pest. This committee, has recommended that all local) bodies should be persuaded to take intonsive and simultaneous action to enforce the water-i hyacinth bye-laws throughout their respective jurisdictions and also by improving and amending! the bye-laws.
It has also been suggested that| anti-water-hyacnith co-operative societies on the line of anti- malarial societies should be organised. The constitution of an All-Bengal Water-Hyacinth, Board is also being contemplated. it may be noted in passing that the water hyacinth has catablished itself all over tropical Asia (including China) and in a large part of Australia.
WELSH VALLEY TO DISAPPEAR.
Churches Doomed by Reservoir Scheme.
One of the most beautiful valleys in industrial Wales, the Pontsticill Valley, in the hill north of Merthyr, will shortly dis- appear for ever under reservoir waters which aca destined to sup ply the needs of some districts of Cardiff, the Rhymney Valley, Pontlottyn, and other densely populated wining centres.
The valley, which contains two century-old churches, about si score of houses and cottages, and half-a-dozen large farmus, forms the centre of the huge Taff Pechan roservoir which is now neuring completion. Nostling bo- tween two stoop hills, with a rivor running through the length of the valloy, the district is an alipost perfect natural reservoir. Along the lower end of the valley a huge concrete dam is being construct- ed, and when this is completed the river water will be trapped und the valley transformed into a three miles long shoot of water.
