The final of the ladies' singles lawn tonnis Championship of the Shanghai Lawn Tennis Association was played at the Majestic Hotel courts last month and resulted in a victory for Mrs. Hicks over Mrs, E. A. Prince. Mro. Hicks won 6-8,6-3, and 6-1. Thisisthesecond time Mrs. Hicks has won the honours and her victory is well doserved. Above is a recent portrait of the lady champion.

The photographer managed to snap these two Chinese countryman indulging in one of the favourite pastimes of the natives, that of gambling by means of bamboo sticks shaken

up in a tin or wooden holder, The fellow on the right has

just pulled out a stick and is looking at his number.

Those with an eye for a pretty spot will find one where a conseless stream of traffic rumbles by. It is the entrance to the] Shanghai Municipal Conservatories at the Garden Bridgo where so many hundreds of beautiful planta flourish.
