This twisted mass of wreckage is all that remained of the Shenandoah, pride of the U.S. navy's lighter-than-air forces. Among the huge girders which the storm snapped as if they wore thin sticks of wood can be seen the tanks of holium, the valuable non-inflammable gas used. Had hydrogen been in these tanks, an explosion and fire would have been almost certain, possibly causing a much greater loss of life.
Members of the Amorican Legion paid full military
honours to the 14 members of the Shenandoah kiled in the
wreck of the dirigible near Ave, Ohio. Hore is a legionaira
standing guard over the coffins of the victims.

This picture shows the middle section of the giant ship Shonandoah, taken shortly after it crashod to the ground near Ava, Ohio, rosulting in the death of 14 men. The steel girders and network of steel supports wero smashed. Scores of farmers and townspeople, seen in the photograph, rushed to the scene of disaster and assisted in disentungling the dead and the injured.
