FINED AT KOWLOON

MAGISTRACY,

Charges of being in unlawful possession of 5,050, catties of pine wood reasonably suspected to have been obtained from the Government Plantations, were brought against three men and six women, of Ngau Tau Kok village, before Mr. E. W. Hamilton at the Kowloon Magis tracy, this morning,

It was atated in evidence by Mr.... J. L King, of the Botanical and Forestry Department, that all the defendants when arrested were found either chopping the wood or conveying it to their respective housee.

The defendants, in their state- ments, pleaded that they purchased the wood legitimately from firewood:" dealers.

His Worship imposed a fine "of 816 on the first defendant, who admitted possession of five catties;: whilst two other defendants, who said they had bought two catties, were fined $12 each. The remainder, were fined $10 each.

CORRESPONDENCE.

[To the Editor, Hongkong,

WEDNESDAY NEXT."

Sir, Your

correspondent "Scotsman" brings to light o very, interesting subject when he asks what our English friends mean when they refer to a coming date BB Bay, Wednesday next. Noxt to the question of the dis- tribution of our forthcoming Trade, Loan, the problem of getting rid of the Bolsheviki in Canton, and" the abolition of the guild system in China, I can think of nothing at the moment which could pos- sibly be more intriguing. Icon- gratulate him on his caution, but why may, I ask, need he be so. meticulous? Why this shrinking, this fear that he may be guilty of some social indiscretion?

There must surbly be something wrong with theScotsmen of to-day, What odds which date the "next" máy mean. By all means go on "Wednesday first and if "Wed- nes next" was intended, then surely no Englishman worthy of the name would refuse bite nor sup to one so ignorant of the Eng- lish language. Two dinners are certainly better than a problema- tical one. Yours, atc,

DUNSCORE.

Hongkong, 5th Oct, 1925.

SMOKING ON FERRIES,

Sir, I consider the letter of your correspondent "Mannerly" replying to "Lady Reader" on the above- subject in rather bad taste. We all know that any passengers bas the right to occupy the front, row of seats, but a smoker ought to remember that the ashes from his/ pipe or cigarette will be blown on others if there is a strong wind blowing. The Smoke Room is on deck and should be used by anyone wanting to smake during the short journey,

How would your correspondent like to be treated to puffs of smoke any flying ashes from fellow passengers when he ought to be breathing in the fresh air of the harbour?Yours, etc.,
