FLYING. OVER GERMANY.

The Freiburg court has fined the French aviator Coste (who crashed near Freiburg on September 13.) 5,000 gold marks for flying over Germany in a type of machine which the Versailles treaty for bids Germany to build. Half the fine has been remitted owing to the period during which the aviator was detained pending trial. Coste, however, is unable to pay the balance which means that he will have to serve a further twelve day's imprisonment. The shattered machine was confiscated,

THE MOROCCAN WAR.

Fez, October 1. The balance of fighting in the first day of the renewed offensive was clearly favourable to the French whose losses were only twenty two killed and wounded. They gained all the objectives north of Kiffane.

The troops engaged, consisting of foreign legionaries, tirailleurs and alpine chasseurs, advanced in three columns and cap- tared the ridges to the north of Kiffane.. They met very strong resistance on the Hammouch ridge where, machine guns were cap Aared. Otherwise the opposition was feeble and confined to isolated parties.

Aircraft largely contributed to the day's success wherein the tanks were very useful, their crews volunteering the most danger. ous tasks, Marshal Petain, and. General Muulin watched the advance from Deameheris.--Reuter.

BRITISH FINANCES,

London, Oct. 1.

The Treasury Return for the first half of the present financial year shows an excess of expenditure" of £86,000,000, compared with an excess of £12,000,000 for the corresponding period last year.

The total revenue was £344,000,000 against a total expenditure of £380,000,000, the deficit being mainly due to decreases in revenue from Income and Corporation Taxes and Estate Duties, aggregating £13,000,000. There are increases in expenditure set against the Sink- ing Fund, the Fighting Services and Civil Service aggregating £17,000,000. The Floating Debt has been increased by £38,000,000 Reuter.

RUSSO-GERMAN TRADE..

Berlin, Oct. 1. Important negotiations are proceeding between German industrial concerns and banks and the Soviet authorities the object being the formation of a Russo-German company with a capital of 50,000,000 marks for the erection, of metal and other factories in Russia, of which the Germans undertake the direction and organisation, the Soviet Government supplying labour and raw materials. The Soviets will also grant the company important privileges-Reuter.

Georges Maspero, with Tal Ming-fu, Secretary of the Chinese Legation and Mr. Armstrong, presenting the Peking syndicate as scrutators, there was adopted the report of 1921 showing a loss of 53,913,000 francs-Reuter.

The French Convent has long been justly famous for the excel- lence of its linen embroidery work, which is all done by the orphan and blind girls of the institution. This year a large and varied assortment of linen and woollen articles will be offered at most reasonable, prices, and those who are, beginning to Wonder what to send to. "the old folks at Home" this coming Christ- mas could not do betler than pay a visit to this Sale.

Linen and woollen articles for all household purposes will also be on view, including a splendid assort ment of baby clothes.

"A special feature of this year's Sale will be a number of French dolls in fancy dress. There will also be several raffles and sweet and refreshment stalls;

Honum yesterday' brought down from Canton the body of the late Mr. D. Mason. wa8 the second engineer who drowned on Monday night when going back to the ship from the Shameen. It appears that the body was discovered floating on the surface down the front reach, opposite the Dutch Folly,

The Customs officers, assisted by sampans, recovered it and it was taken back to the Honam, which ship had just arrvied off Shameen at 4.30 p.m. on Wednes- day.

News of the discovery of the body was received here early yester- day and arrangements for the interment were made while the body was being brought down.
