Every motorist has heard of engine "knocks, but all have not yet experienced them, and by: 20 incans all can 'differentiate one type of "knbeking" from another.
With a modern and normally quiet running engine, even the motoring novieq should be ante to detect an enzine knock. But as there are three or four dif- ferent types, the problem of knowing one from the other. is not quite so easy. You may have a knock due to a worn connect- ing rod bearing, or to a gudgeon; pin which has suffered similarly.
Or you may have a similar] sound but emanating from the

The most profitable of the tubers, the board finds, would be the Jerusalem artichoke, which,; in additions to its tuber below) ground has a plant some eight ori ten feet above ground.
The profit in the extraction of power alcohol from the artichoke is seen in the plant's ease of growth in any well-drained soil and under the most difficult con- ditions. Little labour is needed) to cultivate it, and it propagates itself for a number of years.
Experiments are still being conducted on this source to find the best conditions. under which the fuel can be extracted.
Potatoos and mangolds are two other sources from which power alcohol has been taken, but at a commercial loss, Germany had boon furnishing 95 per cent. of its! alcohol from. potatoes before the war. Now this production has fallen to 15 per cent. of its output) because of the, general opinion i that a greater use can bo lhiad of potatoes as food rather than as a' source for alcohol.
At present wholesale prices for potatoos in Great Britain, they would bring the price of its alcohol to about 7. shillings, or $1.68 a gallon. This puts the potato far out of reach for alcohol production.
This is also true of mangolds, although the extraction process is less costly do!
The closest to a profitable basis is the artichoke, Experiments. are still going on with this plant.
