Frederick Lawton, author of the life of Rodin, tells us how this work made history, and went far to make the future fame of Rodin.
Rodin's model was a young and well-favoured Belgian carpenter, the reproduction of whose nude proportions was made to carry a symbolism that whetted curiosity.
The figure has the right arm aloft, while the pose has that simplicity seen in the purest pro- ductions of art.
ACCEPTED, THEN CONDEMNED.
The figure was first shown in Brussels, being then called the "Age d'Airian" (the Bronze Ago): It was then-accepted by the Paris Salon.

The story of his courage, as told in a recent London (azette says that Mr. H. S. George, a forestry official, was roturning through the jungle to his camp accompanied by Sammal, whe carried his mastor's gun.
Suddenly a man-oating tiger jumped upon Mr. George's back, saized him by the neck and proceeded to drag him into the jungle,
Bammat rushed at the tiger | placed the muzzle of the gun against it and pulled the trigger, but was unable to discharge the weapon owing to the safety catch, with which he was not familiar.
He then shouted and waved his arms, thus driving the tiger off for a short distance.
Mr. George was badly bit'en in the nook and covored with blood, but with the Gond's! assistanca ke managed to stagger alowly along and reached his camp, which was about two miles away.
"The tiger followed them for some distance, but was kept off by the shouts and demonstrations of the Goud.
Sammai, says the Gazelle, cer- tainly prevented the tiger from dragging Mr. George into the jungle, where he would have been eaten.
