First Editions.
Bebind some of the 100,000 books which fill his shop in Char- ing Cross-road, London, Mr. Emanuel Joseph discussed with a newspaper ropresentative re- oeatly the habits of modern col- Joctors.
"There has been an enormous. inoresso in book-gollecting," he esid.
At
one time book- collectors were mainly professora and literary mon. To-day the business man is a keen collector.
"American women are much more interested in books than Englishwomen, but in England there are ten mon collecting books for every one who collected 20 years ago."
Mr. Joseph's family bogan. book-selling in London 200 years ago, and he himself began selling books in Aldgate Market when ho was 11. He is now entering his diamond jubilee.·
Many famous men find their way into his shop. Among the visitors have been Mr. Winston Churchill, Mr. John Burns, M. Herriat, Lord Cromer, Lord Jellicos, Lord Birkenhead, and Admiral Sturdes.
"First editions are more sought after than ever," said Mr. Joseph.. "Writers whose first editions are" now being eagerly collected aro Cunninghame Graham, Alice Meynell, Shaw, Norman Douglas, Galsworthy,Kipling, and Conrad.”. The requirements of those who collect books are attended to on a highly systematic basis to day, it was not always so.
"There is a famous bookseller," said Mr. Joseph, who was most casual. A customer would ask for a certain book. He would admit that he had it, but would add:
"It is at the bottom of the shelf. When we get to it I will remember you,' and perhaps 1,000 volumes were sold before that book was reached."
