The most uniform of these noises is that due to the joints between each successive length of rail: it only varies if different lengths of rail are used. The standard rail length is generally 45 ft., but rails of 60 ft. longth are also in use The primary effect of the longer lengths is economie, since in a mile of permanent way comprising 45 ft. lengths, the number of joints required for tho 60 ft. raile is only 75 per cent. of that required for the 45 ft. rails. That means a saving of 331⁄2 par cont. in fishplates and bolts, together with the saving in time corresponding to the fewer num- ber of joints which require to be made.
