In the Chamber of Deputies M. Briand, asking the postponement. of M. Outrey's interpellation, said that in order to be given satisfac tion, the Government was negotiating actively about the questions raised by the deputy, and public debate would but impede the normal pro gress of the pourparlers. M. Briand added that it was as yet uncon- firmed that f. Karakhan would have lauded the attempt upon M. Morlin, but if the Ambassador really did so the French Govern mart would insist on a penalty. M. Dutrey said he himself was satisfied.-Havas.
HEAT WAVE AND STORMS.
New York, June 4. Many deaths have occurred from a heat wave which is spread Ing over all the castern states.
Violent storms have occurred in the middle west, the estimated damage in Minnesota being $2,500,000. A rainstorm created 1 panic among the racegoers at Omaha, who rushed from the grand stands and threw themselves into the mud, fearing a repetition of the 1918 hurricane.
The southern states however, predict large crop losses unless rains come soon-Router.
·GOVERNOR OF MACAO.
Lisbon, June 4.
In the Chamber, the Minister for the Colonies explained the reasons for the resignation of Dr. Rodrigues, Governor of Macao. He read a document referring to the works of the port of Macao, show Ing that the Governor was of the opinion that 60 per cent. of the capital of the company constructing the port works should be Portuguese.and the rest divided among British and Chinese.
The Governor, who is also a Deputy, defended his attitude. -Reuter.
ITALO-RUSSIAN TREATY.

Rome, June 4. ." The Chamber of Deputies has approved the 'Italo-Russian treaty of commerce signed on February 1924. M. Mussolini said that the results of fifteen,months' working of the treaty seemed satisfactory.
Italy in the first four months of 1925 had imported from Russia 19,000,000 lire worth of goods and exported to Russia 17,000,000 lire worth. The rejection of the treaty would have serious economic and political results--Reuter.

EDUCATION FOR CHINESE.
London, June 4.
An appeal for funds is made in the Times by a Committee of Old Etonians for the purpose of starting and endowing a school under the direction of the Rev. A, T. Polhill, for Chinese boys of over fourteen, They state that a suitable Englishman with experience in teaching in Szechwan district is willing to return as headmaster.-Router.
THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY..
London, June 4.
It is now announced that contracts for £3,500,000 have been placed in Britain for two 10,000 ton cruisers and two sabmarines for the Royal Australian Navy. The cruisers will be similar to the British "County" class.-Reuter.

the mainland were arraigned be- for Mr. B. W. Hamilton at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday, on charges of selling adulterated milk to Inspector Savage, of the Sanitary department on May 4.
In the first case, Wong Chi-kee, of Kowloon City, was charged with selling milk containing $2 per cont of water. The de fendant was represented by Mr.

Kwong Kee, master of a cattle shed at No. 1 Kowloon Teal, was charged with selling milk contain- ing 7 per cent of water. Tho evidence taken showed that Ins pector Savage visited the defen- dant's shed on May 4 and asked for some milk. He was told that the cows had not yet been milked, and left.
He went to another of the.de fendant's sheds, but failed to ob- tain any milk. He returned to the first shed and, after some time, he was given a small quantity of: milk. Witness found that there were two cans containing about four gallons each ready to be sent to the dairy in Hongkong. "The analyst's certificate showed that the milk, contained 7 per cent of water.
The defendant was remanded for one week.
