The Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court were opened this morning, but there were no cases on the Calendar. The Chief Justice observed that he was glad that crime was decreasing. This was brought about partly through the vigour of the Police, and partly by the new gaol re- gulations, which had a deterrent effect. Mr Lister, the Sheriff, then handed to his Lordship a pair of white gloves, enclosed in a Sandal-wood box. This is, we be lieve, the first case of a Virgin Assizes"

in Hongkong for several years.

SUPREME COURT. August 18th.

CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

BEFORE THE HON. CHIEF-JUSTICE SMALE.

The August Criminal Sessions were opened yesterday, when the Attorney-General" said that he was happy to inform his Lordship that no informations had been filed. It was a sub- jeet of great congratulation, and led to the con- clusion that the police seemed to be doing their duty uncommonly well of late.

The Chief Justice said this was the first time, since April, 1801, that such a state of things bad existed, and he must say be thought the authorities should be congratulated, and also the Colony in general. The fact of there being no informations against criminals was not always a test of good government, but there was only one man here now known to have com- mitted a serious crime, who had not been brought to justice, and with this fact before him, he could not help thinking that there was evidence that the greatly improved organisa- tion of the police, and the more severe prison discipline, were waking men afraid to commit crimes, and for this great praise was dne to the Executive.

Mr Lister, the sheriff, then said he believed be had to present his Lordship with a pair of white gloves, and handed up a small box con- taining them.

His Lordship expressed his thanks and his satisfaction in receiving them, and the Court; then rose.

SUPREME COURT.

AUGUST CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

(BEFORE CHIEF JUSTICE SMALE)

Monday, August 18th, 1873. The Attorney-General said that he was happy to inform His Lordship, that it would not be necessary to swear in a jury, as there was not a single indictment on the Calendar, which was a most satisfactory state of affairs, and spoke volumes for the efficeney of the Police force and the Legislation of the Colony.

The Sheriff (A. Lister Esq.,) then said that it was his duty to present to His Lordship the traditional pair of kid gloves.

The Attorney-General said that he was much pleased to see that old customs were not forgotten.

His Lordship, in reply, said that such an occurence had not taken place, since April 1861, He must concur with the Attorney-General's remarks, aud that it must be a source of congratulation to the Authorities. He also understood that there was only one man in custody for a great

? crime, who had not been brought to justice. The Police deserved every praise for the manner in which they conducted their duties.

The Court then rose.
