For the bravest sen rescues, of the year three lifeboatmen wore recently decorated with bronzol modals by Sir Philip Cunliffe-T/T. Ladis Lietor, Prosent of the Board of Trado, They were Coxswain Richard Payne, of Newhaven. and Coxswain Tose and Second Coxswain Thomas Patton, of Runswick (Yorks).
The dood which earned Cox-) swain Payne this distinction was described as follows:-
During a gale the cross-Channel steamer Diappo' wont' ashore as she entered Nowhaven between 4. and 5 in the morning.
One of the tugs which went tof the resous got into such a position that it was dangerous to approach bor, but Coxswain Payne took! charge of the lifeboat and roade for the tug.
Although the tug rolled on the top of the lifeboat, smashing the gunwales, the hull, the crew were takon ashore.
