SPY SECRETS OF WAR.

Scotland Yard's Net for German Agents/

Interesting revelations of the work of German spion in England during the war are made by Sir Bast Thomson, KC.B., in the first of a series of crime stories written specially for the Sunday | News.

Sir Basil Thomson was chief of the Criminal investigation Do- partment for several years, at one time Governor of Dartmoor Con- viot Prison, and lator Governor of Wormwood Scrubs. Ho was at Scotland Yard throughout the war.

During the war, he writes, the Gormans seldom employed spies who undertook the work from matives of patriotism. They pro ferred the hireling, and they chore. him very badly. There were artiste, musloiáns, and even "the lower sort of criminal-persons who were quite untrained for gathering information of any practical value.

One of the German criminals, who may have been liberated from prison for the purpose, was dia- covered by puro accident.

mad by a man who said that he was on the point of sailing to Australia & Manila

Japan England, whore, in the guise of a Shanghai... commercial traveller in patent Manila gaslighters, he intended to collect U.S.A., Canada, Japan & Shanghai...

Australia & Manila....... naval and military information A Stipita

The letter was already some T wooks old. If the man had boon

nila... travelling in wine or boots there Japan... would have been little chance of finding him, but geslighters were so unusual a form of merchandise that, there was just a hope that one of the officers stationed at the ports of entry might remem- bor him, Telegrams were sent to overy port, and a reply was re ceived from Nowcastle-on-tyn Swalow, Amoy & Foochow that

man named Shanghai, Japan, Canada, U.S.A., C. young Rosenthal had made la & S. America & *Europe vis tour of Scotland booking orders

Victoria H.O for gaslighters and was at that very moment on board al steamer bound for Copenhagen which had not yet left the port.

THE FIRST PRECAUTION. Rosenthal was takea ashore and brought to London. He was a young man of oxcitable temperament, who spoke and wrote English very well, though he had atraca of a German Bocent. My first precaution was to make him give me a spoimen of his handwriting, which I saw was identical with that of the mis-sorted letter.

He declared that he was not al German, that be hated Germans; that he had never been to Copenhagen in his life. On the whole, he acted his part very well, but he did not know that I ́hadl the incriminating letter. It was growing dusk when I took out the letter and the specimen of bis bandwriting.

"Now," I said, “I want you to listen very carefully to what I am going to read to you." The electric light had not been switched on, and I had to bend over the latter to read it aloud. I had read halfway through when I heard the click of heels.

I looked up and saw Rosentalh standing rigidly to attention in front of the armchair in which ho had been sitting. "I confess everything," he said: "I am a Ger- man soldier." It was the suddon impulse of a man of sensitive nerves, but it was an histrionic impulse, for he had never been a soldier at all.

He was tried and sentenced to
