In the summer of 1906 Butler, from the station he had erected at Manhattan Beach, L. I, in conjunction with Do Forest, sent the first wireless telegraph meas- age across the Atlantic.
De Forest in 1907 perfected, in the old Parkor Building, New York City, the first audion bulb, the instrument that foreshadowed the dawn of the wireless tele- phone. He and Butler' designed two orudo sending and receiving. sats and went to Put-in-Bay, in Lake Erie, where during the yacht races the wireless tolo- phone proved its worth. De For- est had his set on the Yacht Thelma and sont to Butler, on shore, vorbal accounts of the races on the lako. A
Neither had funds. Toledo be-. ing nearby, Butler induced De Forest to come here where they at least could eat at Butler's father-in-law's table. Setting up their crude sets in the Nicholas and Ohio Buildings they carried on their experiments, using on old talking machine for music when not discussing the results orally by wireless.
Butler saya De Forest got his real financial star when he was ordered in 1908 to build 40 wire- less tolephono sets for Admiral Bob Evans'. fleet about to sail around the world. Butler loft the inventor about this time and organized the American Wireless Institute, the first of its kind in the world.

LOW WAVES. Be Tried In Arcļic. Chicago Practical testing of the
will be undertaken, when Donald B. MaoMillan, the arctic explor- or, goes back north this summer.
It was John L. Reinarts of South Manchester, Conn., who gave voice to the idea that the extremely low wavelengthe can be heard best over long distances during the daytime, even, surpass- ing the best results of long waves at night,
Upon this advice, therefore, MacMillan has decided to equip his boat with a 20-meter tran smitter with which he will send weekly reports to amateurs in America from his station in the arctic. Besides this low wave- length transmittor, however, ho will equip himself with threb oth- ors, one each for transmission on 10, 60 and 180 moters.
Most daylight transmission, however, will be undertaken on the 20-meter band. The 40-meter transmitter will be used around midnight. The 60-meter range will be kept for omorgency calls, and the 180 motor transmitter will be mostly experimental.
Out of the 17,000 amatours in United States, only about 20 åre equipped for 20-meter transmia- sion and reception. Many are therefore rebuilding their sets, or making additions, with the hope of talking, or at least listening, to MacMillan during his arctic sojourn.
MacMillan will take with him 0.11 amateur, picked by the American Radio Relay League as he did last year. The choice, will depend on the amateur's personality, ability and physique, besides bis knowledge of short. wave transmission.

TOY BROADCASTING STATION.
E. W. Edwards, Cincinnati amateur, built this little broadcasting station himself. It is in the collar, of his home: Edwards has broadcast test programmos and has been heard as far as Chicago, on his 200-watt transmitter, but he has to wait for further operations until the Govern ment assigns call letters for it:
