ORIENTAL ANTIQUES,

Offer to Manchester Not "Accepted.

Public intorost is being aroused in Manchastor as to the indecision displayed by the Art Gallery Committee regarding the sccept- anco of Mr.J. Hilditoh's collection of Chinese and Japanese antiquos, worth £250,000..........

This is said to be the most valuable collection of att treasuros over offered to the city; yot for some reason the Art Gallory Committee appoar' reluctant to to accept the gift. After much discussion Mr. William Weathor by, Chairman of the Com- mittee while admitting that Mr. Hilditch is an expert in Chinose antiques, said that there was much disagroomont between exports regarding the value of Oriontal art. Mr. Hilditch's collection was not viewed from the standpoint) of authonieity of money value, but from the intrinsic artistic value of the objects. It was on these lines, be added, that the Committee's conclusions had been arrived at, and though they were not prepared to enter into a long argument about thom they were prepared to defend them. The Committoo's decision would be! mado public in a few days.

A condition of Mr. Hilditch's gift is that the collection is suit- ably housed,

MR. CHURCHILL'S BUDGET.

London, April 29, "The Curate's Egg" may be compared with the results of the most searching.analyses of the Badget, criticisms of which range the uncom- from the Daily Graphic's "Brighter Britain Budget" to promising condemnation of the Daily Express, which refers to a bad budget burdening industry through the insurance scheme, which is intolerable in the present trade depression and bemoaning tho sixpenny reduction in the Income Tax.

Mr. Churchill's boldness and originality are generally recognised, together with the brilliance of his speech. The Financial Times says "It is a good budget and a healthy tonic for all, Restoration of the free gold market will bring far more permanent good than possible the temporary inconvenience and is the best thing possible in interests of British credit and prestige.

The Timea says that Mr. Churchill wisely rejected all quack remedies advocated for relief of what is still a serious financial and economic position. Like his predecessor, Mr. Churchill adheres firmly to steady repayment of our debts.

The Daily News says that the far-reaching and elaborate In- surance project is of supreme importance on the constructive side, requiring the closest scrutiny." The financial and administrative side must strongly appeal to the working classes. The Budget's general financial structure is broadbased on the best British traditions..

The Financial News says that throughout the note of fiscal changes introduced is one of confidence. The Budget should help industry and trade.

The Daily Telegraph says the main features of the Budget will be very welcome to the vast body of people obliged to earn a living but is not satisfactory. Our expenses are rising again.

The Daily Mail says it is an ambitious Budget. Serious abilities are astumed and we must watch vigilantly to see that the promised economies in our grossly inflated expenditure are made.

The Morning Fost says that Mr. Churchill's past did not prevent his present from imposing Imperial preferences. The danger of neglecting them was shown in the recent alarming announcement from South Africa, "[:
