Commercial Wireless in Ceylon: Experiments by Telegraph Tepartment. During the past nine months tests have boon carried out, by tho Telegraph Department, on wire- loss rocoption in various parts of the island with a view to accumu lating data which would indicato the most suitable situation for a wireless station in Coylon capable of antisfactory operation to the South and East as well as to the West, says the Times of Ceylon.
Since the inauguration of the Colombo Wireless Station in 1912, dificulty has been experienced in communicating with ships to the South and East. The director of programmes, privately owned commercial sta for the provision of the modern Mr. Osborno, outlined his idea tion, the naval station at Cavito equipment at the Colombo of the character of the pro- bas justreceivedinstructions from Wireless Station. WEAK SHIP'S SIGNALS. Unfortunately, however, a very large number of ships, which use the port of Colombo, are equipped with vary inferior and inefficient apparatus, which, while meeting with the requirements of the Board of Trade, does not transmit signals of sufficient strength to overcome the screening difficulties in communicating with Colombo Wireless Station when approach. ing from the South-East. Those weak signals could, in the ordinary course, bo" amplified by modern wireless apparatus to make them readable in Colombo, but for the prevalence of severe olectrical disturbances which are common in tropical countries. The wireless receiving apparatus, unfortunately, amplifies these. disturbances simultaneously with the amplification of the ships' signals, with the result that the signals are still overpowered by the extraneous noises.
There are only two ways of overcoming the difficulty. One is to increase the power of all ships' transmitting sets which are at present too weak, and the other is to increase the strength of the signals received relative to the atmospheric disturbances. The first alternative is impracticable, so far as immediate application is concerned, and could only bo adopted by degroes ás obsoleto ships sots are replaced.
PROBABLE SOLUTION.
In order, therefore, to ascertain to what extent the second alter nativo could be applied, those tosts have been carried out by the Telegraph Department. The priacipal object of the toets has been to ascertain in what part of the island signals from ships to the South and the East could be received at the greatest strength. The tests are not yet completed, but, so far, the portion of the island between Nuwara Eliya and Galle has been explored. The South-Eastern section from Ham bantota to Batticalos is to be investigated at an early date.
A large number. of tests have boen carried out, and, although a dofinite conclusion has not yat boon arrived at, tho évidence tends to confirm the vlow of the Tolograph Department that the installation of receiving ap- paratua somewhere in the Bouth- Eastern section in conjunction with the service from the Colombo Station, will provide the solution. to the difficulty and enable ships to get in touch with Colombo when approaching from any [direction, even though they bo
fitted with inefficient sets.
To the layman it might seem that the Horton Plains would give the best results, but this is not the case. What this district Kains in somo directions it. Tosos in others, and, as a matter of fact, Galle has given much bettor results than Horton Plaja in the direction in which improvement is most needed.
The following notification was broadcasted from Cavite on Sa- turday by the navy department, and will be continued for a week, allowing all shipping to become acquainted with the fact that the Far Eastern station KZFR, sit- usted at the Derbam building, will now handle the radio work of the port of Manila..
