The Daily Express forecasta a big financial battle coming ovar » the question of the return to the Gold Standard, wherein the com batants will be the banks and City Interests on the ore part and the producers on the other. The paper declares that opposition to the Gold Standard is headed by the Federation of British Industries, which has formally expressed disapproval and' whose chief •ally in likely to be popular opinion. The paper enumerates the chlof objec tions to the Gold Standard: Firstly, it will muko us an economie vassal of America, with its vast hoard of gold; secondly, the vorg fxity of the Gold Standard may operate adversely to the national interest on certain occasions. It adds: "By accepting the Gold Standard humanity parts with a good deal of the power of grappling with and controlling the ebb and flow between prosperity and depres alon."-Router.

Samuel and Montagu, which shows that during the week, gold valued at G$80,814,000 has been nounced as engaged for shipment from New York, compared with G$11,110,000 during the previous week Tho former amount in- cludes G$17,989,000 to Australia, G$17,775,000 to India, G$5,000,000 to Berlin, G$4,700,000 to "Europe, and the Far East" and G$2,800,000 to Holland.-Router.
