THE ITALIAN
SITUATION.
London, Jan, 6,
The situation in Italy is attracting considerable attention here. Liberal papers particularly aré denunciatory In their criticisms of Mussolini and consider his defiant attitude as the conduct of a desperate man.
Mr. Lloyd George, at the National Liberal Club, "strongly at- tucked Fuscism and declared that repression, intimidation, arson and murder are instruments of the Government of Italy, and there had been nothing worse there since the atrocious rule of King Bombu (Ferdinand 11), of Naples, who reigned in the middle of the alneteenth century). He rejoiced that the great Liberal leaders were beginning a new struggle for italinu freedom.
The Times expresses much doubt regarding the stability of the present regime. On the other hand the Daily Mail pays a glowing tribute to Mussolini, for whoin, It proclaims, the British peoples Intense admiration, and describes him as the chief bulwark of civilisation against Bolshevism.--Reiders
SUPPRESSION OF OPIUM TRAFFIC.
London, Jun. 6.
According to the Manchester Guardian, a Cabinet Minister is likely to be added to the British delegation to the Opium Conference at Geneva, which will resume on January 12. it is understood that tho Cabinet yesterday discussed the question of policy involved,
it may be taken that the British Government, while sympathising with the object of the American proposal to gradually suppress aplum traffic. questions the wisdom of the particular method pro- posed, holding, the opinion that it would be better to evolve a means of controlling the import of opium into countries where the trade i is doing harm than to attempt to end the trade at one stroke.
It is declared that the prominence given to the mailer in India Is quite unfair, it being pointed out that India does not export opium except' to Governments which what it and can control its distribution, and that there has been no export of pium from India to China since 1917, since when its production in China, Persia and Turkey has increased.-Renter.
AMERICAN WAR CLAIMS.
Washington, "Jan. 6. Replying to Britain's contention that the full amount of the American war claims against Germany should not be chargeable against the annuities payable by Germany under the Dawes plun. Mr. Hughes reaffirms the Administration's previoua attitude that Americnu elains are entitled to equal treatment in the allocation of German payments. It is understood, however, that a communica- tion dispatched yesterday reiterates the Government's desire not to press unduly in the matter of time for payments, and its willing- ness to compromise" régarding the period over which the payment of claims may be spread. The Note states the Government does not see anything regarding the claims requiring arbitration, as the British Government suggested,—Renter's American Service.

The Allied nate concerning Cologne has evoked a chorus of protests from the• Press. Herr Marx's orgun, the Germania says that, the note seriou-ly threatens to destroy the mutual confidence of nations which was recently reviving. The Tageblatt says that the German people unanimously reject the monstrous attempt to subject a population of 2,000,000 tọ, fpreign domination. The monarchist paper, the Kreuzkeitung states
that the real reason of this non-evacuation of Cologne is that British needs thefat. Everything of value was taken support of France for an extra-European policy, and therefore gives

HARASSED GERMANY.
Paris, Jan. 6.
The newspapers regard the decision of the German metallur- gical experts not to return to Paris until Thursday as contrary to thele promise, and the fact that Germany has not as yet replied to the French proposals for a, modus vivendi as a more political manoeuvre to make French pressure stop.
According to Le Matin, French experts are of the opinion that the German manoeuvre does not constitute a final decision and will be subdued by firmness and codiness.-Huras.
