THE OPIUM QUESTION,
London, Dec. 15.
In an outspoken article in the Daily News deploring events at the Opium Conference at Geneva, whence he thinks the Empire is coming out anything but well, Mr. H. Wilson Harris says that while Amerlen is co-operating with the League unresavedly, her efforts have failed because Anglo-American co-operation has been lacking, partly because oplum is a vested interest in certain regions of the British Empire.
B. Harris refers to the heavy revenue from opíùm in the Straits
of. Settlements as a strong fiuncial argument for continuance amoking, and gives it as his opinion that the Hague Convention is being assiduously whittled away instead of strengthened, while the new convention Is tantamount to an agreement for the perpetuation of opium smoking in the Far East. He concludes by lamenting the the House of apathy and ignorance of the opium question In Commons-Reuter.
