A quarter of a million rounds of rifle ammunition mounted in. brass clips, which was seized by British marines on two junks in the Soochow creek in the Jessfield district this afternoon was discovered to be spurious. Tests revenied they were reloaded shells with proper caps but that the bullets were made of paper painted a lend colour und the powder was simple red Chinese fire-cracker powder which,' when fired, exploded loudly similar to regular ammunition.

A communique says Chang Teo-lin's troops have been driven out beyond the Great Wall-Reuter.
Tokyo, Oct. 17.
Reports from Mukdon dated the 17th claimed that, the retreat of ten thousand Chihil forces of the first and second divisions having been cut off by a flanking movement of Fengtien, Chang Tsung-chung has launched an offensive against Lanchow by way of Longkou. The fourth brigade has entered Shanbaikuán castle, closing the approach to the city.

The Diplomatie Body at Peking has instructed the Shanghai authorities to depert "Little" Hsa. He will probably be deported to Japan. The situation in Shanghai and the vicinity in qulet. The Fukienite, Sun Chuan-fang has arrived. Chi's chief of staff, Bel Bao-shan has also arrived.

Heavy tighting continues along the Shanhaikuan front where the Fengtien forces aro frantically unsuccessfully in their attempt to occupy Shanbalkunn. Foreign ollicit telegrams indicate that Fengtien is massing troops. there while Wu Pei-fu's lines also are strengthening.
There is reason to believe that Feng Yu-hsiang and Wang! Hual-ching will soon move north eastwards. Wu Pei-fu has hitherto acted on the defensive and seems very confident that when he is ready to strike to be able to deal a 'series of crushing blows,---Reuter.
FRANCO-RUSSIAN RELATIONS.
According to Le Journal the draft note to be sent to Moscow, following the recommendations of the commission on the question of the resumption of Franco-Russian relations, will contain the recognition of the Soviet Government, an invitation to resume-normal relations and a formal recapitulation of debts to be settled, damage for which compensation is due and a statement of principles in con-) nection with personal and treaty rights to be safeguarded.
France will undertake to, en-operate whole-heartedly in the restoration of Russia as soon as the necessary measures have been taken to revive French confidence.
The note will be communicated unofficially to certain Govern- | ment specially interested, particularly the United States, Czecho- Slovakia and Rumania before it is dent to Moscow.–Reuter.
