THE WAR IN THE NORTH.

BIG CHEKIANG SUCCESS CLAIMED.

Shanghai, Sopt, 5. Reuter's special correspondent at Ljuho says that fighting was still going on at eight o'clock to-night. Neither Chi nor Lu seem to be making headway. Lu is transporting immenso quantities of stores and ammunition to Liuho in trucks. There has been litio fighting at IIwangtu, except for a intense half hour this morning.

Shangbal, Sept. 0. Chi has issued a proclamation, which he is circulating to the opposing forces, offering $50,000 for the handing aver of Lu, dead or alive; $50,000 for an officer who deserts with a regiment to Chi's alde; $20,000 for a field piece: $20,000 for an aeroplane: $1,000 for a machine gun; two months pay for an ordinary deserter. The pro-St.

lamation accuses Lu.of crimes "as big as heaven," and says he is A murderer, robber, rebel, tyrant and accopter of bribes, and con- cludes, referring to Lu's soldiers, "I sigh for you."

Reuter's special correspondent in a despatch to-day from Liuho, one of the key positions, states the, Kiongultes are attempting an encircling movement there. There was Intermittost fighting this morning. The correspondent mentions he saw one 7.5 Krupp fleld gun and seven 7.5 "mountain guns," five being of Chineso make and two of Krupp's make; slao several Lewis guns, also big stores of | riste ammunitions (all German) and hand grennden (of Chinese make). There are no trenches. The soldiers are holding the country behind natural mounds, graves, etc. Many soldiers fro into the air. They are fed mostly on worm eaten biscuits, bread and tinned meat.

News of Sun Yat-sen's Intention to send an expeditionary force In support of Lu is confirmed from several sources, and now there is no doubt that the message from Reuter at Shamcon is genuino. At the same time there is a good deal of scepticism of Sun Yat-sen's ability to carry out bis threat, at least in any effective way, especially considering his hands are pretty full at present with a most difficult situation at Canton. However, all news points the decision having been como to, and that at least some sort of move will be attempted.

The British, American, French and Japanese have sent a com- munication to the Walchiaopu requesting protection for foreign lives and property the war zone at Shanghai, and stating that Huangpu 'River from the approaches at Woosung to Shanghai constituted the barbour wherein there should not be any fighting. The Walchlaopu has merely replied that the Government has received an assurance from the Klangau military authorities that they will do their beat for the protection of foreign lives and property. Another Note on this subject will probably be sent to the Waichiaopu.

LEAGUE MATCHES. London, Sept. 7th.-The follow. matches were played On Baturday in the English and Scottish Leagues.

Yesterday afternoon oight motor cars full of Klangsu troops in civilian clothes (or they may have been spies), tried to force an entry into the Klangnan Arsenal about three quarters of a mile from Lang- hun, the headquarters of Ho Feng-lin. When the guards on duty interrogated the occupants in the front cars, revolvers word drawn and bugles sounded by those in the other cars, evidently to calling confederates in the vicinity to their assistance. The Arsenal guards fred, and those in the front cars responded with revolver firing. Then those in the rear started firing, and the garrison opened a volley, killing a few: Tho motorists fed and the guards gave chase and captured three ears, which were found to contain bombs, hand grenades, drums, bugles and rifles. Thirty of the attackers were made prisoners and shot after a brief court martial.

Yesterday morning the railroad bridge between Siccawet and Isiniunghua was blown up by Kiangau eples. Repair work was completed in the afternoon and traffic resumed. The culprits were not caught.
