REGATTA AT WEIHAIWEI: Last week the annual regatta, held every summer at Wellalwet. took place. Our plature show H.M.S. Hawkins riding gracefully at anchor in the harbour. Members of her crew were most successful during the course of the day and carried off the Yokohama Cup for a grand aggregate of marks gained.
YACHT WITH A HISTORY:-The former royal yachi Jacinta, now the Elly, which was bought by Chinese interests some time ago. arrived in Shanghai, recently froin. Tientsin. The yacht has an Interesting history. Bulll In England, she was presented by Queen Victoria to the late King Alphonso of Spain as a wedding gift and used as his private_vacht unul shortly after the Spanish-American-War-when- she was sold to an American in Cuba. Later the ship was sold to an Engilshinan for private use. When the World War broke out she was taken over by the Britlah Government, given the Norvegian Government, her name changed, and registered under the Norwegian flag for the purpose of running poison gas to, Eng- land. It was then that her luxurious staterooms and saloons were dismantled, and the pictures which adorned her wella put in a museum in Christiania. The craft was recently brought to Tintain from Christianis with a cargo of dynamite which was confiscated and the veszol was then sold She will now by used to carry passengera from Shanghal to Hankow.
OLD SHANGHAI RESIDENT.-M...M. M. Baldwin has a real claim to be one of the oldest residents of Shanghai. Sixty-one years ago, when General Gordon was leading his "Ever Victorious Army, Mrs. Baldwin came to Shanghat and during all these years she has only been home to England on one occasion. A low days ago Mrs. Baldvin celebrated her 84th birthday.
