LONDON CONFERENCE

London, Aug. 11. Pending the unfolding of M. Herriot's proposals on the evacua- tier of the Ruhr at the London Conference, there is in tendency to adopt a cautious view as regards the extent of the mandate given the French Premier at Saturday's Cabinet meeting. The Germans are known to be anxious to secure the withdrawal of troops by the time the British forces are due to leave Cologne, while France apparently is now willing to reduce the period of the Ruhr-evácuo- ion from two years to one year, subject to obtaining satisfactory pledges.

France anes value to the assurance given by Mr.. Macdonald tha: no definite decision will be taken immediate ly with regard to British withdrawal from Cologne M. Herriot hizo. favours admitting the Ruhr evacuation, in return for commercial compensation such as the free entry of Iron, ore and other sub- stances from Alsace Lorraine into the Ruhr-Reatry.

The Echo de Paris says that M. Herriot's most powerful argument

to the Cabinet in regard in evacuation was the fact that Britain had decided to wait to see how Germany would observe her obligations before deciding on the evacuation of Cologne, which is due to take place in January.---Reuter,
