Restored,
The work of restoration of the Boro-Budur, in 'Java, which has Įbeen going on for many years, has now been completed. The work was executed under the Aupervision of Colonel of Engineers, Th. van Erp, who has given the Hague correspondent of "The Times" some account of the building. The age of the Boro Budur is a matter of more loss randoin conjecture. Authorities vary widely on the subject. From about A.D. 750 to 850 the Hindu Kings of tho Cailendra Dynasty reigned in Contral Java. the story of the life of buddha, The three upper torracos are circular and are surmounted by the supreme contre, shrine, a domed and spirod ·dagoba (relio shrine) 50 ft. high. ence between the four lower ter- races, with thoir lavish decoration and wealth of detall, and the strict simplicity of the upper part of the structure has a deep significance and demonstrates: the subtle climax of the artist's conception.
PRESERVING THE REMAINS,
- The aim of the restoration throughout was to preserve what remained and to prevent further decay. There was no intention to try to restore the stupa completely to its original state. In the first place, the drainage of the building had to be repaired. For this purpose it was necessary to lay now floors to the three circular terraces and nearly all the galleries. This necessitated breaking up some of the parts. which had suffered most, includ- ing more than 9,000 ft. of the balustrados, and rebuilding them with the material available, only adding now stones whore it was absolutely necessary.
During the oxcavation of the surrounding land, however, it was found that many of the stones. which had been thought lost were lying buried. About seven months. was occupied in sorting the many thousands of sculptured pieces. All were replaced, and the next stop was to repair the parts
