CELEBRATIONS AT
PAKKAL.
four Own Correpondent.J.
Kongmoon, May, 19, Yesterday was a memorable occasion in Pakkai, when the opening of the new house for the Commissioner of Customs was colebrated by Mr. H. D. Hilliard. the prosent Commissoner.. There was a largo gathering at the house, which was thrown open to the community and Mr. Hilliard was host to over a hundred pro- minont
including guests, Chinese and foreign officials, business men and residents, who came to offer their congratula- tions. Strings and strings of fireworks wore suspended from w high acaffolding erected on the top of the houso, over which was flown the Chinese flag. As soon as the clock struck twelve, the crackers wore fired, After a photograph bad been taken, the party walked in procession to the Customs jetty, whence they wore conveyed by the Customs launch and three other motor boats to the Kongmoon Hotel, where a sumptuous dinner, in Chinese fashion, was in store for them. Thore was in evidence such a pleasant blending of ways Chi- nese and foreign as is all too. soldom seen. This, and-the-mo- desty and hospitality of the hont and the appreciation and jovialty. of
the guests, all helped to make the function a great success. Mention of the occasion, however, would not be complete without a brief roference to the house itself. It is built on the top of a small bill, not far behind the Custom House, and is so situated as to command a superb view of the surrounding scenery. With the naked eye one can see the whole city and, with the aid of a toloscope, one can descry Yungki and Tai Leung, in the distance, and the upper decks of the Hongkong steamers can still be seon two hours after their departure from port.
The numerous friends of Mr. dnd Mrs Hilliard will all join in wishing them every comfort and happiness in their new residence.
