NAVY ESTIMATES.

Canton.

London, March 18.

庭 reduction of

The Navy estimates for 1924-5 are £55,800,000,

£2,200,000 compared with the present year. They include £1,800,000. for the commencement of five cruisers and two destroyers.

The Estimates are approximately the equivalent of £34,500,000 pre-war, hence the scale of expenditure on the Navy has been reduced much below the 1914-5 standard, and is equal to the expenditure for 1903-, before the expansion, to meet the German menace. The per-u sonnel is 100,000 compared with 99,500 in the previous year.

A. Memorandum states that the general strategic position now permits a retura to more normal conditions than the retention most of the more modern vessels in Home waters, which was neces- sary for many years prior to the late war.

in the Mediterranean two destroyer flotill ill be replaced by later type vessels, and the Fleet in the Mediterranean will be gradually brought up to the following, the Atlantic Fleet being correspondingly reduced: No battleships; two light cruiser squadrons; four destroyer Botillas; two depot ship; two aircraft carriers; one- repair ship, one submarine flotilla and one submarine depot ship.- Reuter.

THE ORDUNA.

New York, March 13. Three million dollars will probably be demanded as bail for the Ordana. These arrested have been admitted to bail of $10,000 each. -Reuter's American Service.

AQUARIUM BOOM. Not the Old Torture Chamber.

This year is likely to see a great aquarium, boom similar to that of the sixties, when public aquaria sprang up in several towns of this country as well as abroad, says a Home paper.

This is expected to be the result of the opening of "the world's largest aquarium" at the Zoo this spring, and the contemporary extensive venture of the zind by Mac Fisheries, Ltd, at the British Empire Exhibition.

Dealers are this year making arrangements for record importa tions, and the British Aquarium.... Sociaty, of 4. Fatterlane, EC. formed but four years ago, has doubled its membership in 12 months.

It would be interesting to know who actually started the aquarium hobby. The Chinese- and Japanese, in their own clever- way, have specialised in the keeping and breeding of fancy fish for many centuries, whilst the ancient Romans were so keen. that they constructed canals in order that fresh supplies of salt water from the sea might, at high too frequently meant a gasping tide, replenish the ponds and goldfish in a shadeless, foodless, aquaria which formed such
