now
forwarded I have to explain that the Vote for Clothing and Accoutrements required by the Police
was
exceeded
owing
to some
of
the Chinese
the Batta for 1871 being paid in 1872; to the Additional Force being enrolled after the preparation of the Estimates, who needed, of course, to be clothed
and to the original vote (£6000) being much less than is plainly wanted to purchase uniforms for
about
1000
600
Men.
Of the other item I may report that, although there is a
large
sum down in the Ordinance
for Works and Buildings, and Roads
192
7
Streets and Bridges- the Details
which
are set out in the enclosures to this despatch - yet the actual expenditure under these heads
was
only $9,212.68 in excess of
the Estimates
for the
year. With those remarks
I beg to solicit that the Ordinance may
be submitted for Your Majesty's
gracious confirmation and allowance
I have the honor to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient
humble servant,
Arthur Edward Kennedy
