REMARKABLE TUBE RAILWAY INCIDENT.

London, Nov. 25.

A grave disaster was narrowly averted on the City and South Landen Tube Railway last evening where the driver, noticing sand and stones failing, succeeded in rushing his train through before the walls collapsed, blocking the line, causing the gas main abova to burst, producing a terrific explosion in the street overhead, where the fames rose to thirty feet and a great bole was made. Many people were thrown to the ground but no one was injured.

BRITISH ELECTIONS.

3

London, Nur: 23. Mr. Churchill speaking at Leicester said: "Whether we shall set Premier Baldwin off the front bench I do not know but I am certain we shall get Mr. MacDonald of the front opposition beach." A piquant incident occurred at a labour meeting at Buckingham. In a speech Mr. Oliver-Baldwin, the Premier's son, criticised the Government's inaction. The only thing the Government had done during the past year, he said, was to wrongfully arrest a mamber of persons and then have to pay compensation. The only protection they wanted was against a government like that. He advocated a labour government on the lines of that ruling in. Georgia, South

nssia, which was governed by a social democratic party.

SOVIET DEFENCE.

Riga, Nov. 23. 1. Trotzky, through his deputy 3. AMERICA AND THE BOOTLEGGERS.

Ottawa, Nov. 26.

As to the conferences between United States and Canadian officials, which are being held in camera, it is unlikely that the results will be announced pending the Canadian Government's top- sideration of the American proposals. It is stated that the Ameri- cans have requested that boot-legging be made 20

extraditable offence.
