THE PRODIGAL.
(An utterly moral-less story.)
BY BERTON BRALEY,
The Prodigal Son struck the home-going track,
His fortunes were all in a wreck: His father beheld him come wearily back, And ran out and fell on his neck.
He slaughtered the calf that was tender and fat,
And all of the neighborhood learned.
By feasting and dancing and merriment, that The Prodigal Son had returned.
+
*
Said the Prodigal Son, "I have wandered, in truth,
Afar from the ways that are straight.
With all of the folly and ardor of youth,
I've lived at a terrible rate.
I've gambled and rambled and played with the vamps,
The way I've behaved is a crime,
But father, although I've been one of the scampe:
I've sure had a wonderful time!"
*
The Prodigal's father then drew him aside.
And whispered, deep under his breath,
"Your brother, my son, is my boast and my pride,
But oh, he just bores me to death l
It sure was delightful to have you appear
Exactly the way that you did,"
So tell me the story I'm waiting to hear.
Yes, spill it, I'm listening, kid!"*

+
The Prodigal told of his prodigal ways,
And his ancestor nodded his head;
"Reminds me a lot of my own salad days,
You sowed a mean wildoat," he said.
"I'm glad you are home, and far be it from me
To tempt you to anything wrong,
But should you grow restless--next time you break free.
I hope you will take me along!"
The Shanghai Times of Novem- ber 3rd reports:
The Mixed Court yesterday handed down a decision in favour of Captain J. Roberts in his action against Ong Kyung-zae, the owner of the s.s. Sri Samud, from. which Captais Roberts was dis missed and forcibly removed by the Hongkong Water Police on the owner's agent's instructions.
The plaintif alleged in the trial that the reason for his dis- missal was the fact that the ship had been loaded over her plimsol mark and was in no condition to go to sea. The defence accused Captain Roberts of drunkenness. It was also alleged that one of the causes for his dismissal was his refusal, with others, to pay a certain sum of money to the Straits Service Merchants' Guild & contribution towards the czection of a new club room. The amount requested was the difference between the old pay rate and the one established in 1919 for ons month.
&8
Captain Roberts was mate of the Sri Samud and in his suit claimed a total of $1,383.36 and for such other relief as the Court thought just. Judgment was given in the amount of $1,021 12. of which $353.76 had been previously paid
