the first time, though he was gazetted as having been appointed the 29th February to that Office.

Mr. Trumberg informs me that he has been resident in Canton during the interval, and that he must, from the nature of his business, continue to reside there for an indefinite time.

He acted for Mr. Cimbeke, late German Consul, representing him at Canton.

Your Lordship is aware that Mr. Cimbeke, on relinquishing the German Consulship at Canton, assumed that of Peru, and I am given to believe that Mr. Trumberg is in reality his clerk.

In view of questions which may arise in consequence of German firms resident in Canton mixing themselves up (as some of them undoubtedly have done) with Coolie trading to Peru and other places, I think this arrangement obviously objectionable, and that Her Majesty's Government should be made acquainted with it.

I have the honor to be, My Lord, Your Lordship's most obedient humble servant;

Kennedy, Governor.
