I have received your despatch of the 4th of April last recommending the temporary employment of Lieut. Gossett R.N. in the Surveyor General's Dept., and an increase to the Salary of Mr. R. M. Alford, the Inspector of Buildings.

2. Having regard to the absence of Mr. Dukes, the Clerk of Works, on sick leave, I will not object to the employment of Lieut. Gossett on a salary of $500 per mensem, including allowance; but this arrangement must cease within two months after Price's arrival in Hongkong.
