Report by Dr. Legge and Mr. Stewart as to the progress of Mr Alford in his studies of the Chinese Language

"We have examined Mr Alford, and have much pleasure in reporting that he speaks the local dialect with considerable correctness. He has, also, made good progress and fluency in the written character.

"We are of opinion that (especially if the continuance of his teacher's allowance be given) he should be encouraged to prosecute the study of the Language, which he has to do under much difficulty, from having to devote a large portion of the day to his official duties. The progress he has made, under the circumstances, is highly praiseworthy.
