acting as Clerk of Surveys in lieu of Quartermaster Sergeant, Valuator and Assistant Registrar at an annual salary £400, with allowances of £75.-

Under C. S. C. 13072 of 1872,

he was on the 1st of January 1875 relieved of the office of Valuator, and the Salary attached thereto was simultaneously given up.

At the present time he is in receipt of only £250 salary and £75 for Clerk of Works and Chinese Teacher.

It must be allowed, that such a sum is far from being adequate remuneration; and considering the length of service of Mr. Alford has had in the department; his value in this office from his knowledge of Chinese, his ability to survey ground, (a requirement which no other subordinate possesses) and his great devotion to his work; I would most strongly recommend to the favourable consideration of His Excellency that his salary should be raised to $200 per month with his present allowances.

I have to,

(Signed) A. W. L. Macurdy Acting Surveyor General
