THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE
London, Oct 4.
Last right's function in honour of the members of the Im- perial Conference was a banquet at the Mansion House given by the London Chamber of Commerce which was attanded by three hundred and any people.
The Duke of Devonshire, replying to the toast of the Economic Conference, declared that as the Empire had proved to be. the "greatest war organisation in history so to-day it was the greatest organisation known in history for the preservation of the peace of the world.
Mr. H. Burton, K.C., South Africa. emphasised that it was essential that the Conference should observe the principle that each part of the Empire should retain the right to frame its own fiscal policy. Departure therefrom would strika a severe blow at the unity of the Empire.
Viscount Peel, responding to the toast of the Empire Over- seas, spined that there was no need for anxiety that trade from Britain to India would be diminished,

STRICKEN JAPANESE.
London. Oct. 4.
Major H. G. Brackley, in a letter to The Times, appeals for aid to the Lord Mayor's Japanese Relief Fund He declares that hundreds of thousands of Japanese are in a position of real despair. The Japanese, who are proad and seek to conceal their sufferinga, are reluctant to ask for aid, but nobody who seeks to appreciat: the true situation can fail to realise the immesse ceed in which they stand, especially with winter approaching. Anyone in Eng- land who is able to aid the Lord Mayor's fund may be assured that he will be contributing to make life on bare necessaries just possible for these stricken people. The Japanese, besides being thrifty and hardworking, are a grateful people with long memories.
CHINA'S ECONOMIC CONDITION.
Berlin, Oct. 4. Commenting on the Chinese Government's appointment of a doancial commissise the Times remarks that the value of the For- inquiry depends upon the capacity of the investigators tunately the personnel of the commission, is strong. The news of the appointment had a grod sentimental effect on the market for Chinese securities yesterday. but the crucial test of the Gorera- meat's action will come when they are faced with the task of carrying out the Commission's recommendatioca. Foreign capital- lete are only too anxious to invest their funds in the development of China bat will hesitate to do so as long as Chine finance remains ta present chaotic state.

READING COLLIERY DISASTER.
London, Oct. 4
The Rescuers' persistence at the Redding pit was rewarded at three o'clock this morting, after all hope had been abandoned, by the recovery alive of ve miners, all in good condition.
The rescues were the result of ten days of gigantic toil. digging through debris in the direction of the elevation pit known as Spionkop. Here the five were found buddled together. They crawled out on, all fours like frogs, all except one being in com- paratively good physical condition. They had kept themselves alive with water, and were cheered by the sounds of blasting and boring for the last four daya.
