We cannot live without light z but long-continued excess of strong sunlight may cause morbid changes in the skin that eventu ally become cancerous, as has been specially observed in Queensland. Evidently surcha changes are analogous to those that may follow long exposure to soft Rontgen rays.

ECONOMISE WITH SUGAR We cannot live without sygar in the blood, for the heart and muscles of respiration to use in their contractions

our be-

half: but excess of sugar, if long continued, is a factor of great danger. The suggestion is now being made that diabetes, due to failure of the body to produce in- sulin for itself, really follows. from excessive activity leading to

exhaustion of those particular cells in the "islands" of Langer- hans in the pancreas whose fun- jction it is to supply insulia in proportion to the demands made them by the upon

diet. This is by no means tr accuse all diabetic persons of excessive consumption of starchy": and sugary food, but it suggests the results of excess relative to the particular capacity of the island cells of the person in question. We are not suprised to find diabetes a disease mostly of the prosperous, and we may specially pity the poor who hap pen to acquire a malady so ex- pensive to relieve.

Quite apart from this very specific and well defined disease. pathologists are bound to in- criminate dietary excess in general, though in somewhat less. precise terms. All the vital statisticians are agreed that, after making due allowance for the great reduction in the consump- tion of alcohol during and after the war in such countries as Germany, Austria, and Denmark. there remains a marked reduc- tion in certain forms of disease associated in their causation with too much food. The starvation effect of partial upon 20 nation may thus be, whilst increasing rickets and tuberculosis in childhood; to reduce diabetes and arterial degeneration and renal disease and

amongst the formerly too prosperous middle-aged. Finally, one word to remind the reader that the increase of concer among luxurious modern peoples indica- tes a probability which becomes more probable with each new statistical inquiry into the subjest and which must now be examined by the methods of the laboratory.
