Giving a summary of last Friday's meeting of the Joint Committee the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall said a telegram had been sent to London, advising the Exhibition Committee thero that 125 Chinese would be sent from Hongkong, 100 men and 25 women and girls, and that the restaurant scheme had been aban doned on account of the expense involved. The London Committeel had replied, urging the reinstate- ment of the schemic because an. alteration in the general plans, which had already been perfected, would mean annecessary, waste time. Besides, it properly run, n restaurant in the Chinese section should prove a profitable venture. If any difficulty should arise in securing an efficient staff, the reply stated, suitable men could be en- gaged in London to take up the management and Hongkong need only send waiters and others atten-! dapts. "Authorised Exhibitors."
Mr. Kotewall eaid it was E. E. the Governor's wish that an official check he kept on the funds pro- vided by the Government to assist Chinese exhibitors. As to the neces sity for proper control of the money the Joint Committee was in ngree- neat, and they had appointed Messrs. Lowe, Bingham and Mat- thews as auditors. Hon. Mr. Kotewall referred, in cursory manner, to cor- tain forms prepared by the auditora for distribution among Chinese ex- hibitors to help them in keeping a check on the funds. The forms ask: for particulars of exhibitors' names and aldresses, specification and value of goods sent, etc. As to the procedure that had been proposed under the fron-of-freight, system, Mr. Edtowall said it had been sug- gested that only goods approved by the Joint Committee would be sent.
