As the torrents of the molton lava from Mt. Eins swept down on the town of Castig lione, its population rushed frantically to the little railroad station to get out of the zone of danger. Less than 24 hours after they left, the entire town was destroyed. Thirty thou- sand were made homeless and millions were lost in the disaster which continued soveral days after the first eruption.
Leaving their possessions behind, 30,000 Sicilians flad from the path of the raging sas of hot lava pouring down upon their towns. Picture shows a close-up view of lava sweeping down the mountains.
