A notable Millais picture has been secured for the National Gallery of Victoria at Melbourne.
The Rescue" was exhibited at the Royal Academy In 1855. 1t was bought at Christie's lately 1for 1,400 guineas by Mr. Samp- son, who has ceded it to the National Gallery of Victoria at the price be paid for it. Its purchase money is derived from the funds of the Felton Bequest, through which Victoris is becoming one of the greatest art galleries outside Europe: The picture represents a scene at a fire in a modern house, with a mother seizing her rescued child from the arms of a fireman. The rapture of the mother and the flare of the conflagration aro depicted in a realistic manner. The picture was a new departure for Millais and wis one of the most discussed works in the ox hibition. The fire which served as the artist's original impulse "to honour a set of men quietly doing a poble work occurred close to Moux's Brewery. Very early one morning, returning from a ball in orchester-terrace, Millais noticed the bright reflec tion in the xks and reached the fire as the fire engine dashed up Mrs. Nas, sister of Judge Hugbor, the Authn of Tom Brown's Scholias," sat for the mother, and the fireman was 'a stalwart model named Baker.
